In fact, the Dilophosaurus was North America’s largest carnivorous dinosaur at the time. They weighed about 1,500 pounds and measured 20 feet long.
What Was The Dilophosaurus Diet?
Because of their light bone structure and slight build, the Dilophosaurus could move very fast and was likely a hunter rather than a scavenger. They were an apex predator during the early Jurassic period, which was about 195 million years ago.


Dilophosaurus Fun Facts
- Dilophosaurus means ‘double-crested lizard’ in Greek. The name refers to the two bony ridges running along the top of the Dilophosaurus skull.
- Dilophosaurus’ lived in the US! They existed in what is now the southwestern United States, in states like California and Arizona.
- Dilophosaurus were bipedal animals, meaning they walked on two legs instead of four. Their front legs were short and not meant for walking: much better for feasting on prey!
- The Dilophosaurus is the state dinosaur of Connecticut!
