There were so many amazing creatures roaming the earth millions of years ago. But who would have reigned supreme? Were the scariest dinosaurs the most powerful? What about cute dinosaurs, or marine dinosaurs? From classic fan favorites to lesser-known beasts, we’re here to break down iconic dino battles!

Velociraptor vs Utahraptor

Velociraptors and Utahraptors are both members of the same dinosaur family, but they were very different species! While Velociraptors are known for being small, speedy, and agile, the Utahraptor was much larger, and likely had feathers AND wings. Just like a prehistoric chicken… but MUCH more dangerous!
Because velociraptors moved so quickly, they relied on their speed to outrun their predators. However, Utahraptors’ size allowed them to attack other dinosaurs. The Utahraptor skeleton was quite large, so they were at the top of the food chain with few natural predators. Utahraptors were also very strong and were able to hunt large prey, using their impressive size and sharp claws to take down other dinosaurs.

Even though these beasts were both quite impressive, it is likely that a Utahraptor would win in a duel because of their size and strength.

Pterodactyl vs Pteranodon

Technically, neither Pterodactyls nor Pteranodons were dinosaurs. They were actually flying reptiles, considered to be close relatives of dinosaurs. The Pterodactyl skeleton was much smaller, with a wingspan of under 4 feet, while Pteranodons were much bigger with wingspans of up to 20 feet!

Pterodactyls and Pteranodons were both flying beasts of the same animal family, although they lived millions of years apart. But that doesn’t mean we can’t daydream about what their epic battle would have been like…

Pteranodons were known for not having any teeth. Can you imagine? What would we eat our snacks with?! Don’t worry, Pteranodons were still able to eat plenty of fish and swallow them whole. Pterodactyls, on the other hand, did have teeth! In fact, they had hundreds of small needlelike teeth they used for straining plankton and other tiny animals.

Because Pteranodons were much bigger, they likely would have dominance over Pterodactyls. However, because Pterodactyls had teeth where Pteranodons did not, that may have given the smaller creatures a competitive edge. We’re giving it to the toothy Pterodactyls!

Spinosaurus vs T Rex

You might be familiar with this matchup from a classic dino come-to-life movie 😉 These two are a couple of scary dinosaurs ready to rumble. So, let’s dive into this legendary matchup!

Spinosaurus’ were larger, taller, and weighed more than a Tyrannosaurus Rex. In fact, they were the largest known carnivorous dinosaur. They were also thought to be aquatic dinosaurs. They could even swim underwater! Depending on where this epic brawl took place, if the Spinosaurus could lead a T Rex into the water, the Spinosaurus would likely come out victorious.

Even though the Spinosaurus was much bigger than a Tyrannosaurus in almost every way, the T Rex had a much more powerful jaw, stronger muscles, and a better ability to move and navigate quickly on land. It’s unlikely that a Spinosaurus would be able to keep up with a T Rex and match their dexterity on land. Point goes to T Rex!
