Blow Fly Habitat
Blowflies love warm, moist places like forests and fields. They can also be found inside, although they’re not the same thing as a common house fly! Blowflies are slightly bigger, and blue or green in color. You may have seen them buzzing around your compost or in your backyard. In fact, no matter where you are, you’re likely to see a blow fly! They can be found in all 50 U.S. states, as well as in parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe.
What Do Blow Flies Eat?
Blow flies are scavengers, meaning they eat decaying matter and living things that are already dead. They play an important role in the food chain by breaking down waste and recycling nutrients back into the soil. They can often be found munching on dead plants or animals and are likely to find a food source pretty much anywhere they can!

- If you can get close enough, you’ll find that blow flies have a bit of glitz to them. Their wings are shiny and metallic!
- These critters may be small, but don’t underestimate them! Blow flies can travel up to 15 miles a day by flight.
- Blow flies taste things with their feet! Yup, you read that right. They have taste receptors on their lower legs and feet, so when they land on something they might want to munch on, they’re known to walk all over it to get a good taste!
- Blow flies do not sting or bite people. They’re totally harmless! Unless you’re a tasty sandwich…
